Road Trip 2010 - Day 12

Goodmorning!
We woke up with the sun this morning and tore down camp...took us a while because it rained some in the night and the tarp was wet. It was a beautiful morning and we were looking forward to a good hike into Bryce Canyon.
From one of the overlooks. I want to say Sunset Point....but neither of us can really remember. Haha
I will never tire of these views! I love this place!

Thor's Hammer

About to start the hike into the canyon. Gorgeous day!

I love to see the blue sky against the red rocks. It is just amazing! The colors really contrast each other and complement each other so well.
I want to say these clouds snuck up on us...but we could hear the thunder for a long time.
About now we were wishing that we had lugged the rain jackets we brought. Correction: Dad insisted that we bring. :) There was quite a bit of lightening though...so we decided to hole up and wait it out. We ended up in a very small arch with a very nice bunch of tourists. (Yes, I realize we are technically tourists too...but these were either from Germany or Austria. Much more touristy than we were!)

It got pretty cool during the rain. Once the lightening let up some we decided to make a break for it. We were still nearly a mile from the top, so we buried our electronics at the bottom of our packs and hiked as fast as we could each time the rain let up some. It really started coming down when we were about halfway out and we leaned under a ledge (with some French tourists) to protect the cameras and phones...meanwhile our fronts got drenched. After a while we decided it wasn't going to get any better so we really made a run for it. And by run I mean walk as fast as our low altitude lungs could handle.

We finally got to the top and found our way to a shuttle stop and stood there freezing for about 10 minutes until the shuttle ran. It took us out to our car where we changed into warm, dry clothes and then went to Subway for lunch.

We took off to drive over to Grandma Poulson's to stay the night. I love that drive. It was beautiful. Really, I just love Southern Utah. Or all of Utah really! :)

How could you not love this?
We arrived at Grandma's in the late afternoon. It is still so much like I remember.
(PS This was the pic I took when leaving the next morning...I forgot to take one when we got there.)
